HC Deb 16 April 1935 vol 300 c1659
47. Mr. LYONS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether upon any and what occasion the Import Duties Advisory Committee have made a recommendation for the imposition of a, duty upon their own initiative, and without application by an interested industry?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Duff Cooper)

I do not think I should be justified in asking the Committee to search their records for particulars of this kind. I am informed by them, however, that while it is their practice to keep the course of imports under review, they have 'seldom since their comprehensive recommendations in 1932 had occasion to undertake the detailed investigation of a case in which the industry concerned or members of it had failed to make representations.

Mr. CHORLTON

Is my hon. Friend aware that the collecting of information required by this Committee and the time taken to get any application through are having a serious effect and causing many industries not to apply at all?
