§ 48. Brigadier-General NATIONasked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has information showing how many foreign migrants have entered the Dominion of Canada during the last 10 years; and from what countries they have chiefly originated?
Mr. J. H. THOMASDuring the 10 years ending 31st March, 1933, 470,368 migrants entered the Dominion of Canada from the Continent of Europe. The chief countries of origin were Germany, Ruthenia, Scandinavia and Poland. In addition 210,899 came from the United States of America.
§ Brigadier-General NATIONCan my right hon. Friend say whether the number entering into Canada annually is increasing or decreasing at the present time?
Mr. THOMASI should think that at the moment it is decreasing, but, taking the period that my hon. and gallant 360 Friend has referred to, 424,514 migrants from the United Kingdom entered Canada.
§ Mr. KIRKWOODIs it the case that the population of Canada has not increased in the last 50 years?
Mr. THOMASI am sure, if we look at the geographical position of Canada, that if it had increased 50 times Canada could still do with it.
§ Mr. KIRKWOODBut that is not an answer to my question.
