HC Deb 03 April 1935 vol 300 c360
49. Mr. DENVILLE

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether soldiers in the Reserve remain under contract of service to the War Office?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Douglas Hacking)

Yes, Sir. The reservist is under contract of service to His Majesty.

Mr. DENVILLE

Is my right hon. Friend aware that on one side of the River Tyne for the purpose of transitional payment it is acknowledged that men on the Reserve have a contract of service and their income from that source is not taken into account for transitional payment, but that on the North side, at Newcastle in particular, one week is deducted from single men and two weeks from married men during the course of each month because they are in the Reserve?

Mr. HACKING

I am not aware of that, but the fact remains that the man is under a contract of service.
