asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons unemployed in Wigan in October, 1931, and October, 1934, giving separate figures for men, women, and juveniles?

Following is the statement:

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons unemployed in Lancashire in October, 1931, and the same date in 1934, giving separately the number in the coal and cotton industries?

Mr. STANLEY

The numbers of unemployed persons on the registers of employment exchanges (including Juvenile Employment Bureaux) in Lancashire at 26th October, 1931, and 22nd October, 1934, were respectively, 528,492 and 385,915. Statistics of the numbers of persons unemployed in individual industries are only available in respect of persons insured against unemployment. The numbers of such persons aged 16 to 64 recorded as unemployed in the coal mining industry in Lancashire at these dates were respectively, 35,599 and 23,676; the corresponding figures for the cotton industry were 162,699 and 94,290.

asked the Minister of Labour the number of males over 18 years of age who were registered as unemployed at Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, and Edinburgh on the 1st September, 1932, 1933, and 1934?

asked the Minister of Labour what were the numbers of the unemployed at Slough in the last month before the abolition of the training centre in that town; and what the number has been each month since?

The Training Centre at Slough was closed on 28th September, 1932. The following Table shows the numbers of unemployed persons on the registers of the Slough Employment Exchange at a date towards the end of each month since August, 1932.

asked the Minister of Labour the number of unemployed under 18 years of age, giving the number of males and females separately, who were registering at the Employment Exchanges in London at the last convenient date?

At 22nd October, 1934, there were 3,451 unemployed boys, and 2,165 unemployed girls under 18 years of age, on the registers of Employment Exchanges and Juvenile Employment Bureaux in the London Administrative Division.
