HC Deb 29 November 1934 vol 295 cc1008-9
47. Mr. ROBINSON (for Mr. ESSENHIGH)

asked the Lord President of the Council the reasons why the recent petition presented by the Newton-in-Maker-field Urban District Council to be granted a charter of incorporation as a borough was refused?

Captain MARGESSON

I have been asked to reply to this question. I am not able to disclose the detailed grounds on which advice is tendered to His Majesty by the Privy Council. In the case to which my hon. Friend refers, however, regard was had, among other considerations, to the administration of certain important local services, the standard in which fell short of that required in an area seeking borough status.
