HC Deb 31 May 1934 vol 290 cc344-5
22. Mr. D. G. SOMERVILLE

asked the Minister of Health whether he will consider the desirability of suggesting to all local authorities possessed of swimming baths the necessity of insisting upon a rigid standard of purity of the water?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of HEALTH (Mr. Shakespeare)

A report on the purification of water in swimming baths was prepared by the Ministry in 1929. The report emphasised the importance of clean water in public baths and explained the best method of purification. Local authorities are well aware of the recommendations in the report and my right hon. Friend proposes again to call attention to them in the forthcoming annual report of the Ministry.

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

Does it cover also pools which do not belong to local authorities, like these swimming pools which have been created in such large numbers?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

In a case like that, if the water were impure, it would constitute a nuisance under the Public Health Act, and local authorities already have power to deal with it.

Mr. LEVY

Do the inspectors of public health take periodical tests of the water?
