HC Deb 29 May 1934 vol 290 cc13-4
21. Mr. LEWIS

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs if he has yet received any official communication from the Government of South Africa on the subject of the future administration of the various native protectorates adjoining the territory of the Union of South Africa?

Mr. J. H. THOMAS

I have received a personal letter from General Hertzog in which he submits certain reasons for asking that the question of the transfer of these territories to the Union may be further considered.

Mr. LEWIS

Will my right hon. Friend tell the House whether, in the event of His Majesty's Government deciding that some transfer should take place of part or all of these territories, this House will first have an opportunity of expressing an opinion on the matter?

Mr. THOMAS

I have already stated that provision is made for that in the statement made on behalf of the then Government when the South Africa Act was before the House.

Captain MACDONALD

Will the right hon. Gentleman say whether any request or communication has been received from the protectorates themselves with regard to their future position?

Mr. THOMAS

No, I have not received any particular request.
