HC Deb 16 May 1934 vol 289 cc1748-9
15. Sir GEORGE GILLETT

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the overcrowded condition and the lack of suitable accommodation in the women's prison at Bethlehem, in Palestine, so that there are cases of women suffering from insanity living alongside the other prisoners, whom they disturb night and day with their cries; and whether he will take steps to remedy this?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I have no detailed information regarding the conditions that exist in this prison. I will bring the question to the notice of the Government of Palestine : but as they have made provision in the Estimates for the current year for additional accommodation for female prisoners, I have no doubt that they are taking steps to the end suggested by my hon. Friend.
