HC Deb 16 May 1934 vol 289 c1754
39. Sir NICHOLAS GRATTAN-DOYLE (for Mr. POTTER)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will request the Manchester chamber of commerce to inspect the Lancashire mills before he takes further steps to protect the Lancashire cotton industry against foreign competition and report to him on the present equipment of British mills for spinning coarse and medium counts, with special reference to their capacity to compete with any of the foreign mills erected since 1919?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Dr. Burgin)

I have no reason to suppose that the equipment of the Lancashire cotton spinning industry is not receiving adequate consideration by those concerned and I do not think I could properly suggest an inquiry by the Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
