HC Deb 01 May 1934 vol 289 cc151-2
73. Mr. ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether physical exercise classes under a qualified gymnastic instructor now form a part of the regular curriculum in all the larger prisons?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir John Gilmour)

Yes, Sir. Men who are physically fit receive physical training daily under the supervision of qualified officers unless they are employed on outdoor work of a kind which makes such exercises less necessary. In addition, gymnastic classes under specially qualified gymnastic instructors are held in the evenings at practically all establishments, except those where the age or physical condition of the prisoners make it undesirable. In women's establishments the numbers suitable for physical training are small, but classes are held where possible and there is a qualified physical training instructress at Aylesbury Borstal Institution.

Mr. MACQUISTEN

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that this gymnastic instruction does not have any effect in increasing the skill and qualifications of the cat burglar?
