HC Deb 01 May 1934 vol 289 c152
74. Mr. THORNE

asked the Home Secretary if he has received a report from his inspector in connection with the serious injury sustained by a youth who was trapped for nearly two hours in a lift at the Popular Café, Piccadilly; whether proper appliances are in use at this hotel for the purpose of safeguarding their employés; and, if not, what steps he intends taking in the matter?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I have received a report on this unfortunate occurrence. The accident appears to have been due to the youth having overbalanced while travelling on the lift, though it was intended for goods only and was full of baskets; and there was a notice strictly forbidding employés and carmen to travel on the lift. I have no powers as regards dangerous practices or safeguards on hotel and restaurant lifts and no information indicating that any general action on the subject is called for. In the present case, however, I am arranging for a factory inspector to discuss with the firm whether there are any further precautions which can usefully be taken to prevent any repetition of such an occurrence.
