HC Deb 22 March 1934 vol 287 c1385
48. Mr. TEMPLE MORRIS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether in the recruitment of Class I civil servants increasing importance is being attached to the possession of commercial knowledge as an adjunct to diplomatic service; and, if not, whether he will consider appropriate modification of the regulations for enrolment?

The Secretary of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir John Simon)

With a view to encouraging the acquisition of commercial knowledge a change was made in 1933 in the examination for the Foreign Office and Diplomatic Service by which candidates are required to offer economics as one of their subjects.
