HC Deb 21 March 1934 vol 287 cc1196-7
9. Mr. CHORLTON

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if any steps are being taken to start up or increase cotton cultivation in colonies other than those now supplying this country?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The whole question of cotton cultivation in the colonies is under constant observation, and, if opportunity offers, steps will be taken to encourage its introduction where the economic conditions would justify it.

Mr. CHORLTON

Are there any other Colonies which have started cotton growing?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The hon. Member asked if any steps are being taken to start up or increase cotton cultivation in Colonies other than those now supplying this country. It is proceeding very satisfactorily in Colonies like Uganda, where it is well established, and, if there is a proposal to start cotton growing in Colonies which do not at present grow it, it would be done if prospects were satisfactory.
