§ Sir WILLIAM DAVISONMay I ask the Leader of the House whether it will not be possible for the Government to give more than one day to the discussion of the Betting and Lotteries Bill, in view of the large number of back-benchers who desire to represent the views of their constituents in this matter? The House of Lords, I believe, gave two days, if not three, to the Bill. Surely one day to discuss a matter which affects so many people in this country is not sufficient, if a proper expression of opinion is to go from this House?
§ The LORD PRESIDENT of the COUNCIL (Mr. Baldwin)I did not know that the question was to be asked. I am perfectly clear that it will be impossible in the present state of business to give more time. I hope that the Bill
§ has been clarified to some extent by its passage through another place. Although I am aware there must be many divergencies of testimony which hon. Members will desire to put before the House, I hope one day will be sufficient. We might possibly suspend the Standing Order to give hon. Members (more time.
§ Sir W. DAVISONIf it appears that a very large number of Members are anxious to speak and have not an opportunity, will the Government consider allotting further time if necessary?
§ Mr. BALDWINWe always give the most earnest consideration to the desires of hon. Members, and of course this suggestion will be considered, but I cannot hold out any hope that it will be considered favourably.
§
Motion made, and Question put,
That the Proceedings on Government Business be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[Mr. Baldwin.]
