asked the Minister of Health whether he will furnish a return giving such information as is available as to which county councils are paying the travelling expenses of their members, as permitted by Section 294 of the Local Government Act, 1933, and what scales are in force where councils are paying expenses?

The information which the hon. Member desires would have to be specially collected from all counties and, as at present advised, I do not think the cost of doing so would be justified. In reply to the last part of the question, I may point out that the power given by the section quoted is to defray expenses necessarily incurred in travelling to and from meetings, and not to pay according to a fixed scale
