HC Deb 14 June 1934 vol 290 cc1878-9
18. Viscountess ASTOR

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education what local education authorities submitted plans for new nursery schools during 1931; and which of these were refused by the Board of Education on account of the economy cuts?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

Eleven local education authorities submitted proposals for new nursery schools during the year 1931. In the case of seven of these, approval of the proposal was withheld on account of the financial circumstances, but one has since been allowed to proceed. I will circulate a list of the local education authorities concerned in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Viscountess ASTOR

Would the hon. Gentleman promise us, now that the financial circumstances are better, that he will give the local authorities permission to establish these schools?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

That must depend on the urgency of the circumstances.

Following is the list:

  • *Aberdare.
  • *Accrington.
  • *Birmingham.
  • Bradford (2 schools).
  • Burnley.
  • Cumberland.
  • *Leicester.
  • Liverpool.
  • *Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
  • *Northampton.
  • *†Swansea.
  • *Approval withheld.
  • *† Subsequently allowed to proceed.
