HC Deb 06 June 1934 vol 290 cc920-1
31. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he can furnish an estimate of the stocks of wheat held throughout the world on the latest available date and on the same date a year previously?

Dr. BURGIN

An estimate of the total world supplies of wheat is made on 31st August of each year by the Food Research Institute. They estimate that on 1st August, 1933, stocks were 1,106 million bushels and on 1st August, 1932, 996 million bushels.

Mr. C. WILLIAMS

Can the hon. Gentleman assure the House that the President of the Board of Trade will give this matter his careful consideration on his return?

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

May I ask whether any estimate has been made of the present year's crop and what the estimated yield will be?

Dr. BURGIN

There is no reason to infer that on 1st August this year the stocks will be very different from those of last year.
