HC Deb 25 July 1934 vol 292 cc1779-80
38. Mr. T. SMITH (for Mr. THORNE)

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he has any statement to give to the House in connection with the Government workers' request for a 40-hour week; and whether the Government's considered reply has been sent to the workers' secretary of the joint coordinating committee of Government workers?

Mr. COOPER

At the meeting of the Joint Co-ordinating Committee for Government Industrial Establishments held on the 18th July, the Trade Union Side were informed by the Official Side that His Majesty's Government could not agree to the motion of the Trade Union Side for the reduction of the, working week of Government industrial employes to 40 hours without reduction of pay. The Trade Union Side indicated that they desired that the matter should be further considered at the next meeting of the committee.
