HC Deb 19 July 1934 vol 292 cc1263-4
36. Mr. LECKIE

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has now come to a decision on the suggested establishment of regional schemes for the slaughtering of animals as recommended in the report of the Reorganisation Commission for fat stock?

Mr. ELLIOT

As indicated in the statement on the livestock situation, which I made to the House on 11th July last, the long-term plan favoured by the Government envisages a reform of the slaughtering system, but I am not at present in a position to make any further statement on the subject.

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

Do I understand that the right hon. Gentleman is not committed to the abolition of private slaughter-houses in rural areas?

Mr. ELLIOT

I am not committed in any way.
