HC Deb 18 July 1934 vol 292 c1097
34. Mrs. COPELAND

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the weather experts' prophecy of another five years of hot summers, he will consider putting the police into light-weight cool uniforms during the hot weather, especially when on point duty?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir John Gilmour)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave on Monday to the hon. Member for Abertillery (Mr. Daggar).

Sir ASSHETON POWNALL

Does the right hon. Gentleman not realise the importance of those engaged in public duties being suitably dressed during heat waves?

Mr. KNIGHT

Will the right hon. Gentleman make inquiry in the city of Nottingham where police officers on point duty are allowed to dispense with their tunics but are required to wear white gloves?
