HC Deb 18 July 1934 vol 292 cc1082-3
4. Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that a Hungarian visa is no longer required for the passports of British tourists visiting that country; and whether the British Government is extending reciprocal treatment to Hungarian visitors to Great Britain?

Sir J. SIMON

His Majesty's Government have been informed by the Hungarian Government that for the period 1st May-30th September this year the visa obligation would be suspended in favour of British subjects from the United Kingdom proceeding to Hungary. While His Majesty's Government much appreciate the action of the Hungarian Government in this matter, they regret that they are unable at present to reciprocate as, for financial reasons, it is not possible to conclude any further visa abolition agreements in present circumstances.

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

Would my right hon. Friend consider, in the interests of tourist traffic to this country, giving this temporary respite in regard to British visas?

Sir J. SIMON

I really do not think that the matter to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers interferes with tourist traffic with Hungary, which, I am glad to say, is substantial. It is a purely temporary arrangement made from the 1st May last to 30th September. I think that any suggestion in the middle of July that we should make some other arrangement is not practicable.
