HC Deb 18 July 1934 vol 292 cc1092-3
26. Mr. CLARRY

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office, whether, in view of the recommendation of the special industrial commissioner for South Wales, it is proposed to establish a permanent and extensive heavy munition works in that area; and, in that event, will he give consideration to the claims of Newport in regard to transport and other necessary large scale production activities?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Douglas Hacking)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given yesterday to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for South Cardiff (Captain A. Evans), to which I am unable to add.

Mr. CLARRY

May I assume that the Special Industrial Commissioner has reported, or is reporting, on the lines indicated, that is to say, with the object of transferring large munition works to South Wales?

Mr. HACKING

As I said yesterday, I have no knowledge whatever of a report that has been made by the Commissioner in South Wales.

Mr. THORNE

Is the Minister aware that there is a place called West Ham on the map?
