HC Deb 16 July 1934 vol 292 cc759-60
3. Mr. T. SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for India whether, in view of the changed political circumstances in India, he will now consider the remission of sentence on Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru?

Sir S. HOARE

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was sentenced in February last to two years simple imprisonment, not for an offence connected with the Civil Disobedience movement, but for three seditious and inflammatory speeches delivered by him in Calcutta. In these circumstances, it is not possible to consider any remission of sentence in his case.
