HC Deb 09 July 1934 vol 292 cc3-4
3. Duchess of ATHOLL

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that in March last, in the Tanjore district, an Indian sub-magistrate was beaten to death and a head constable and two persons killed; what was the cause of the riot; and what steps have been taken to bring the murderers to justice?

Sir S. HOARE

The riot occurred at a local festival on the 26th March, and was the outcome of an Order passed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code prohibiting, in accordance with the policy of Government, the practice of self-mutilation by "hook-swinging" at the festival. Fifty-five persons are now standing their trial before a special magistrate charged with rioting and causing the death of the officers mentioned.
