HC Deb 09 July 1934 vol 292 cc19-20
33. Mr. BATEY

asked the Minister of Labour when the Unemployment Assistance Board will take over the responsibility for the unemployed now in receipt of Poor Law relief?

Mr. STANLEY

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave on 5th July on this subject to the hon. Member for East Birkenhead (Mr. White) and the hon. Member for Plaistow (Mr. Thorne).

Mr. BATEY

Were we not given to understand from that reply that the regulations would not be ready until after the House rises for the Recess? Will they not be ready and will not this new expensive gilt-edged board be ready before the House rises to take over the able-bodied unemployed who are on relief?

Mr. STANLEY

As I informed the House last week, in view of the immense amount of preliminary work that has to be done, I am afraid there is no possibility of that, but I can assure the hon. Gentleman that I realise the urgency of this matter and that there will be n[...] avoidable delay.

Mr. BATEY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when be estimates this board will be in a position to commence its work?

Mr. STANLEY

I am afraid I cannot give an answer to that question.
