HC Deb 04 July 1934 vol 291 cc1884-5
2. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in the view of the Government, any international convention is still possible as a result of the Disarmament Conference; and, if not, what action the Government now proposes to take in support of the collective system of the League of Nations, or whether they have any alternative policy?

Sir J. SIMON

The position of His Majesty's Government in this matter remains as stated by myself at Geneva on the 30th May and as expressed in the resolution which His Majesty's Government, together with other members of the Disarmament Conference, adopted at the General Commission of the Conference on the 8th June last.

Mr. MANDER

Can my right hon. Friend say how he reconciles that with the statement made by the Secretary of State for Air, that all hope of the Disarmament Conference has now been abandoned by the Government?

Sir J. SIMON

I do not think that is an accurate statement of what my right hon. Friend said: it is not for me to deal with that question, but I might say that what my right hon. Friend said is quite consistent with what I have said now.

Mr. MANDER

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise this matter on the adjournment at an early date.
