asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can give any information relating to the setting up of the credit institution for the purpose of providing finance for the development of medium and small-sized manufacturing and trading concerns?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I presume that my hon. Friend has in mind the statements made in the report of the Macmillan Committee regarding the representations which had been made to them on this subject. The committee clearly had in mind that the setting up of such a credit institution was a matter which should be pursued on an ordinary commercial basis. I understand that the matter has been, and still is, under consideration in the City.
