HC Deb 06 February 1934 vol 285 cc968-9
49. Mr. LAMBERT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he proposes to repeal the land tax provisions of the Budget of 1931 during the present Session of Parliament?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am afraid that I cannot anticipate the Budget statement.

Mr. LAMBERT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that unless he deals with these taxes there will be a sharp struggle against them here, and is it wise for the Government to put into the Opposition Lobby on a matter like this some of their best supporters?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

It would not be wise for me to anticipate the Budget statement.

Mr. THORNE

Would not the Government in this case start to dig their own grave?

Mr. D. G. SOMERVILLE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what is the object of the Government in continuing these moribund provisions?

Mr. MANDER

Will the right hon. Gentleman also bear in mind the observations of the Prime Minister and the Dominions Secretary on this subject?
