HC Deb 03 December 1934 vol 295 cc1212-3
2. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has considered the petition from the citizens of Tangasseri, asking that they he not transferred from British India to the State of Travancore and that they wish to remain under the British flag; and whether this cession has been made, and why?

6. Duchess of ATHOLL

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has considered a memorial from the residents of Tangasseri, in Southern British India, protesting against a proposal of the Government of India to transfer them to the State of Travancore; whether he is aware that this community consists of 2,000 persons, all Roman Catholic but one family, and has been under European rule for five centuries; that they strongly object to becoming subjects of a Hindu State on educational, religious and other grounds; and why the long-established principle is being departed from that no subjects of British India are transferred to Indian States against their will?

Sir S. HOARE

I have seen a copy of the representation in question, which is addressed to the Governor-General. I understand that the Government of India are awaiting the views of the local government.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Will it he settled without consultation with the home Government?

Sir S. HOARE

No, Sir. I think that in the ordinary course I should be informed if any change was proposed.

Mr. ANNESLEY SOMERVILLE

Has any attempt been made to ascertain the opinion of this Christian community and has their consent to transfer their status as British citizens to a native State been ascertained?

Sir S. HOARE

I prefer to await the report of the Madras Government. I feel sure that the Madras Government will take into account the views of the inhabitants if and when it makes any recommendation on the subject.
