HC Deb 03 December 1934 vol 295 cc1211-2
1. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for India what sentence was passed on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and for what offence; and how long he has still to remain in prison?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Sir Samuel Hoare)

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was sentenced on the 16th February, 1934, to two years simple imprisonment under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code for three seditious and inflammatory speeches delivered by him in Calcutta. He has so far served rather more than 10 months of his sentence.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is really only a man rather like myself?

Sir S. HOARE

I should not like to draw a comparison.

Captain PETER MACDONALD

Is the right hon. and gallant Member speaking for himself?
