HC Deb 18 April 1934 vol 288 c949
16. Mr. MALLALIEU

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the number of Natives of Nigeria tried and executed during the three years 1931, 1932 and 1933 without being allowed to employ counsel in their defence?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The number of persons executed after trial before Provincial and Native Courts during the three years was 170, namely:

In 1931 66
In 1932 70
In 1933 34
Of these the great majority were tried by the Provincial Courts, which have now been superseded by the High Court for the Protectorate before which accused persons can be represented by counsel.
