HC Deb 18 April 1934 vol 288 cc945-6
5. Sir C. CAYZER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that Chile continues in complete default on her obligation to British investors in her foreign loans; and will he state what progress has thus far been made by the Chilean Government towards resumption in whole or in part of the service of pre-War loans floated in London?

Sir J. SIMON

Yes, Sir. My information is that so far no progress has been made 'by the Chilean Government towards the resumption of the service of these loans. I would add, however, that the financial traditions of Chile are such as to justify the hope that payment will be resumed as soon as the improvement of the fiscal resources and the availability of international exchange permit of this being done.
