HC Deb 30 November 1933 vol 283 cc1057-8
71. Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the names of the cruisers under the superintendence of the Fishery Board for Scotland which have broken down during the past five years, and the period or periods during which they have been withdrawn from service for repairs?

Sir G. COLLINS

The only fishery cruiser belonging to the Fishery Board for Scotland which has broken down during the past five years is the motor cruiser "Rona." Apart from normal periods for overhaul this vessel was withdrawn from duty for special repairs in consequence of breakdowns for various periods during the past five years, amounting in all to 313 days. Other arrangements are being made for policing this winter the waters in which the "Rona" has hitherto been employed.

Mr. MACLEAN

When this vessel was laid up for a year was any other vessel asked for from the Admiralty or any other State Department to take its place?

Sir G. COLLINS

I am afraid I cannot answer as to what steps were taken during the past five years, when this vessel was laid up, but I shall make inquiries if the hon. Member so desires.

Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that he would avoid all these complaints if the ships were made and manned by Englishmen and repaired in English harbours?

72. Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the respective ages and speeds of the cruisers under the superintendent of the Fishery Board for Scotland, namely steam cruisers "Brenda," "Minna," "Vigilant," "Freya," "Norma," and motor-cruisers "Vaila" and "Rona"?

Sir G. COLLINS

The information asked for by the hon. Member involves a table of figures. I propose therefore, with his permission, to circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the information:
