HC Deb 28 November 1933 vol 283 cc688-9
53. Mr. LAWSON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is now in a position to make a statement on the financial arrangements between the Government and the local authorities on the transference of the unemployed under the Unemployment Bill?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which was given yesterday to a question asked by the hon. Member for West Ham (Mr. Thorne).

Mr. THORNE

Has the right hon. Gentleman made up his mind already that he is going to make no compromise at all with local authorities?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I do not think that any further conversations are likely to take place on this subject.

Mr. THORNE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that a meeting is to be held in the House of Commons on Thursday on this matter, and will he be prepared to receive a delegation from that meeting if they can persuade him that they are on the right lines?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am afraid that it will be too late.

Mr. LAWSON

Is it not the fact that the right hon. Gentleman has made no progress in this matter?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I think that considerable progress has been made in the negotiations which have been going on.
