§ 12. Mr. STOURTON (for Mr. Law)asked the Secretary of State for India what provision is being made for the widow of the late Mr. B. E. J. Burge?
§ Sir S. HOAREI hope that this matter will be shortly settled, and I shall certainly deal with it most sympathetically when I receive the Government of India's recommendations. I have reason to hope that, pending a decision, Mrs. Burge is not being embarrassed by the delay.
§ 19. Mr. DORANasked the Secretary of State for India what steps have been taken by the Indian Government to secure the arrest of those persons connected with the assassination of Mr. R. Burge in Midnapore; if any persons have been arrested so far; and what precautions have been taken to afford the new magistrate additional safeguard?
§ Sir S. HOAREOf the two actual assailants, one was shot dead and the other died of his wounds. I understand that nearly 40 arrests were subsequently made in connection with the murder, and that the trial of 13 accused is about to begin. In addition to the necessary personal protection for the new magistrate, further steps have been taken to control the movements of Hindu youths, to quarter additional police, and to strengthen the Intelligence Service.
Duchess of ATHOLLIs it the case, as has been alleged, that the first official sent down to Midnapore from Calcutta went, not to inquire into the circumstances of the murder, but to investigate some allegation that had been made against the police?
§ Sir S. HOARENo, Sir. I have seen that statement made before. It is grossly and entirely untrue.
