HC Deb 13 November 1933 vol 281 cc538-9
10. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for India what increase in Japanese hosiery imports into India has taken place during the past year, and the number of hosiery factories in India closed down during the same period?

Sir S. HOARE

I am circulating some statistics in reply to the first part of the question. I have no information in regard to the second part.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Will the right hon. Gentleman endeavour to secure the information sought in the last part of the question?

Sir S. HOARE

Yes, I will look into that request.

Following are the statistics:

11. Mr. T. SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been called to the protest of the Burma Indian Chamber of Commerce to the Government of India on 26th September with reference to the dumping of rice by Japan in India; and what steps, if any, the Government of India propose to take in the matter?

Sir S. HOARE

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. No doubt the Government of India are taking account of it in connection with the negotiations which are now in progress.

Mr. SMITH

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the Government of India are being urged to take any action, and, if so, the nature of such action?

Sir S. HOARE

No; I have no information to that effect.
