HC Deb 07 November 1933 vol 281 cc15-6
24. Mr. LUNN

asked the Minister of Labour what was the number of mineworkers totally or partially unemployed in September, 1931, and at the latest possible date?

Sir H. BETTERTON

At 21st September, 1931, there were 208,468 insured persons in the coal mining industry classification in Great Britain recorded as wholly unemployed, and 109,291 temporarily stopped. At 23rd October, 1933, the corresponding figures were 223,090 wholly unemployed and 106,193 temporarily stopped.

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir John Gilmour)

I have no information regarding the appeal referred to other than that which has already been published in the Press. The question of the legality of the scheme will, I understand, be coming before the courts in the course of a few days, and, while the case is pending, it would be improper for me to make any statement on the matter.
