HC Deb 07 November 1933 vol 281 c27
44. Sir A. POWNALL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the amount to the last available date of the assessments for beer duty at the lower rate of duty, and how it compares with the assessment for the similar period last year?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The total amounts of Excise duty assessed on homemade beer brewed during the months May to October (both inclusive) in the years 1932 and 1933, were in 1932 £37,300,000, and in 1933 approximately £28,578,000.

Viscountess ASTOR

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that with, £4,000,000 he could give every child in England half-a-pint of milk, whereas he has given £14,000,000 to the brewers?

Sir WILLIAM WAYLAND

Considering the very good result which has followed the reduction by ld. a pint, will the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in the interests of the Exchequer, consider further reducing the Duty

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I cannot anticipate the Budget statement.

48. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

(for Mr. MITCHESON) asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total receipts from the Beer Duty to date since the reduction of the Beer Duty, and, for comparison, the corresponding amount for the similar period of last year?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN
