HC Deb 30 May 1933 vol 278 cc1706-7
35. Mr. PERKINS

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he will state the average cost per pupil for education in elementary schools and secondary schools in Scotland and the similar cost for England?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Ramsbotham)

The average cost per pupil for education in elementary schools in England and Wales in 1931 was £12 12s. 6d. The average cost per pupil in secondary schools maintained by local education authorities was £31 10s. gross, or £24 15s. net after deducting receipts from fees. I am asked by my right hon. Friend the Secretary.of State for Scotland to say that on account of the intimate association between primary and secondary education in Scotland, it is not possible to state separately the cost of education of either type.

Mr. PERKINS

Can the Minister say whether it is a fact that it costs more to educate a Scotsman than an Englishman?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

I am unable to say what it costs in Scotland, because I cannot compare the figures with England.
