HC Deb 23 May 1933 vol 278 c926
38. Mr. LAWS0N

asked the Minister of Health the number of applications by local authorities for loans to carry out public works; how many "have been accepted and passed by him; and whether grants have been refused in any case?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

My right hon. Friend regrets that without long special investigation he cannot give the number of applications received by him, but he has, Since he became Minister of Health, sanctioned loans for public works to the amount, apart from housing, of about £35,000,000 and rejected applications to an estimated amount of about £2,500,000. None of the schemes included in the latter amount would have earned education or road grants.

Mr. H. WILLIAM'S

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that some of the local authorities are borrowing too much to spend on public works?
