HC Deb 22 May 1933 vol 278 cc755-6
33. Brigadier-General NATION

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can give the House any information as to the action the Government proposes to take on Sir Samuel Wilson's report on his visit to Malaya?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

No, Sir. I am not yet in a position to make a statement on the subject.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

In considering this question, will my right hon. Friend try to preserve the control of this House over the people of Malaya, rather than substitute for that control the domination of the PrInces of Malaya?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

No. That seems to me to be an erroneous and tendencious statement.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that this report of Sir Samuel Wilson is in favour of our transferring powers from this House and from his Office to the various Sultans in Malaya, and that that is a retrograde step?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

No. If my right hon. and gallant Friend will read the report with care, he will find out that this is the natural and orderly sequence of the policy which his Government, as well as others, have pursued.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

That may be so, but has not the right hon. Gentleman, with advantage, substituted a new policy in the case of Cyprus, and will he carry out his new policy in this case rather than any old policy?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

Where I shall follow the right hon. and gallant Gentleman's policy is where it is right, and where I shall change it is where I consider it is wrong.
