HC Deb 23 March 1933 vol 276 cc499-500
70. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how much money has been lent or spent by the British taxpayer in Tanganyika since we took over responsibility for it; and, in view of the harmful effects on trade and business in that country owing to the uncertainty regarding its future status, he will give an assurance that no further consideration will be given to the question of surrendering our mandate?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister)

Grants-in-aid amount to £408,100 and Exchequer loans to £3,085,891. There have also been certain grants from the Colonial Development Fund amounting to approximately £110,000 and loans from the same source totalling about £26,000. His Majesty's Government have never contemplated any surrender of the mandate.
