HC Deb 22 March 1933 vol 276 c315
8. Mr. HALL-CAINE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any further review has recently been given, to the question of the discontinuance of the Congo Basin Treaties; and, ii not, whether he will arrange for such a review in consequence of the large area which could receive and give Imperial Preference if such treaties were abrogated?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The matter is at present under consideration. These treaties do not preclude the grant of preferential treatment in this country to British dependencies within the conventional basin of the Congo.

12. Mr. GLOSSOP

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether it is proposed to take steps to revise the Congo Basin Treaty on its expiry this year, in order to ensure that preference may be accorded to British goods entering Kenya, Tanganyika and Uganda?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The whole question of the so-called "Congo Basin Treaties" is at present under examination by His Majesty's Government, but my hon. Friend is mistaken in supposing that any of these treaties expire this year.
