§ 22. Sir ALAN McLEANasked the Minister of labour how many aliens are 2143 now employed in beet-sugar factories in Great Britain under permits issued by the Home Office on the recommendation of his Department; and how many have been so employed for six years and upwards?
§ Sir H. BETTERTONThe number of aliens now employed in beet-sugar factories in Great Britain under permit conditions is 12. Two of these are leaving the country at the end of this month; of the remaining 10, 5 have been employed here for more than six years.
§ 23. Sir A. McLEANasked the Minister of Labour whether it is still a condition of the permit issued by the Home Office, on the recommendation of his Department, for the employment of aliens in beet-sugar factories in Great Britain that British subjects are trained by the aliens?
§ Sir H. BETTERTONYes, Sir. I should point out, however, that in certain cases where the foreigner has been in this country for a number of years, it may be decided to remove any restrictions upon his further stay, and in such cases the conditions would naturally no longer apply. I may add that no permits for the admission of foreigners for the beet-sugar industry have been issued since July, 1929.
