§ 29. Mr. McKEAGasked the Attorney- General the total cost for 1932 of the Department of the King's Proctor, and also the number of eases in which the King's Proctor intervened during the same year?
The SOLICITOR-GENERAL (Sir Boyd Mierriman)It is not possible to state exactly the total cost of the Department of the King's Proctor as it is a branch of the Treasury Solicitor's office and there is one staff common to both. The total salaries of the staff who are engaged from time to time on the work of the King's Proctor's Department amounted in 1932 to £4,083 4s. 2d. The net expenditure apart from salaries was £5,122 14s. lid. During that period the King's Proctor intervened in 30 cases.
§ Mr. McKEAGIs my hon. and learned Friend aware that, quite apart from the question of economy, certain eminent judges of the High Court have expressed themselves in favour of the abolition of this department, and, in those circumstances, will he consider the advisability of abolishing it?
The SOLICITOR-GENERALI am aware that judges of the High Court from time to time direct the King's Proctor to intervene in cases, and my right hon. and learned Friend the Attorney-General is not prepared to consider the abolition of the King's Proctor.
