HC Deb 14 March 1933 vol 275 c1762
5. Mr. CAMPBELL

asked the President of the Board of Trade how the volume of retained manufactured imports in 1923 and 1924, respectively, compared with that in 1932?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Eliminating the effect of price changes, the volume of the retained imports into the United Kingdom of 'articles wholly or mainly manufactured was in 1923 about the same as in 1932. In 1924 it was greater than in 1932 by about 18 per cent.

Mr. CAMPBELL

Do not these figures indicate that more protection for our best industries is required if they are to succeed?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

My hon. Friend is quite capable of drawing his own deductions from my statement.

Mr. CAMPBELL

But will my right hon. Friend take suitable action?
