HC Deb 14 March 1933 vol 275 cc1768-9
14. Mr. SMEDLEY CROOKE

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office if in order to support the claims of the unemployed ex-service men, he will issue instructions that those taking part in the present recruiting campaign should recommend to employers that they should give preference to ex-service men and Territorials in offering employment?

Mr. COOPER

I presume that my hon. Friend refers to the recruiting tour for the Territorial Army undertaken by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and the Director-General of the Territorial Army. This tour is not directly concerned with the employment of ex-service men, but every opportunity is being taken, I understand, to press the claims of the Territorials upon employers.

Mr. CROOKE

Is the Financial Secretary aware that his Noble Friend is leaving out of his calculations altogether the claims of ex-service men?

Mr. COOPER

This particular tour is concerned with recruiting for the Territorial Army, and my Noble Friend cannot take into consideration every claim that may be put forward but of course he is in favour of ex-service men as much as Territorials.
