HC Deb 14 June 1933 vol 279 cc155-6
13. Mr. HENDERSON STEWART

asked the First Commissioner of Works if instructions are now being given by his Department that all materials used on and for the building work which comes directly or indirectly under their control shall be of British manufacture, irrespective of price and quality?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

No change has been made in the long established policy of the Office of Works of specifying in building contracts that the materials used shall be of British manufacture whenever it is known that suitable materials of such manufacture are available.

thing may be done in that direction. Finances are very straitened at present. I should be extremely glad to see English teachers in Cyprus schools, provided they were able to teach in the languages which the people understand, but the real difficulty is that the scales of pay are such that I do not think it would be possible to attract English teachers.
