HC Deb 13 June 1933 vol 279 c22
33. Mr. TOM SMITH (for Mr. THORNE)

asked the Home Secretary the amount of tax borne by each barrel of 36 gallons of beer brewed by the State management and sold at 5d. per pint?

Sir J. GILMOUR

To state the amount of tax paid per barrel would be equivalent to stating the gravity, and, as my right hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary said in reply to a question on the 30th May, the State management. in conformity with commercial practice, ought not to publish this information.

Mr. SMITH

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that on analysis this beer has been proved to have a gravity of 10.42 degrees, and, in that case, should not the tax be at the rate of 54s. per barrel?
