The total is 995 admitted through open competitive examinations, as compared with rather more than 5,000 ex-service men.

48. Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the total number of eligible clerks in the Board of Inland Revenue for appointment to the new S-class as at 1st April, 1933, showing what number were P-class clerks, and the number of temporary clerks; and if he will state the total number of P-class clerks promoted to establishment in the Board of Inland Revenue up to the 1st April, 1933?

The total number of clerks in the Inland Revenue who were eligible for appointment to the new S-class is 1,919, of whom 1,152 were P-class clerks and 767 temporary clerks. Up to the 1st April, 1933, established certificates as S-class clerks had been issued for 554 men (466 ex-P-class clerks and 88 ex-temporary clerks). The corresponding numbers up to date are 1,687 (1,037 ex-P-class clerks and 650 ex-temporary clerks).

49. Mr. MABANE

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what is the number of men in the S-class in the Civil Service; what proportion are ex-service men; what is the average weekly wage paid to this class; and what is the average number of years service?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

The S-class comprises about 10,000 men almost all of whom are ex-service men. It is estimated that the average weekly wage of members of the class is approximately 66 shillings per week, and the average length of service 13 years.
